Welding and torches

Small stick welders, torch heads and the gear for joining, heating and freeing metal in a home garage.

What decides the choice here

House current has a ceiling

These machines run from a standard grounded outlet, which suits gate hinges, brackets, trailer tabs and farm repairs. Structural steel belongs to a shop with a heavier feed.

Thin cords starve the arc

A long household extension cord drops the line voltage and the bead goes ropey. Short and thick beats long and thin on every job.

The helmet is yours

A machine here comes with its holder and a chipping brush. The helmet, the gloves and the jacket come off your own shelf before the first arc.

Where this shelf turns up

The same piece often belongs to more than one part of the property. These are the places this shelf reaches.

How we think about this shelf

A broken hinge tab does not need a welding shop, a trailer and half a day. It needs twenty minutes with a small machine and an outlet by the garage door. That is the entire reason this shelf exists.

Torch heads sit here for the other half of metal work, which is heat rather than joining. Loosening a seized nut, sweating a joint, thawing a line, burning back a weed in a gravel seam. The head threads onto a camping cylinder that any hardware aisle carries, so the gas is a five dollar decision rather than a delivery.
